Lo-fi hip-hop turned imperfection into the point. Its lineage runs through the beat-tape culture of J Dilla and Madlib — drums deliberately dragged off the grid, samples left rough — and the warm jazz-inflected instrumentals of Nujabes, before the "beats to study to" streaming era of the late 2010s turned the aesthetic into a global background hum.
Sonically, lo-fi is subtraction: rounded transients, filtered highs, tempo in the 70–90 BPM range, and a drunk swing that keeps hits from ever landing exactly together. Surface noise belongs in that picture too — but in the hits, not on a pad of its own, which is why the dust here is baked into the 808 and the kicks rather than laid over the top of them.
