Trap & drill drum kits
The lane the 808 built. Tempos sit between 130 and 150 BPM but the groove is half-time, so the beat feels closer to 70 — fast hats over a slow backbeat is the duality the whole genre runs on. The snare or clap lands on beat 3 rather than on 2 and 4, hats carry the motion in 16ths with triplet rolls, and the 808 is not a kick with a tail: it is the bassline, tuned to the key and sliding between notes. Drill twists two things out of that blueprint — a tresillo hat pattern and an 808 that whoops upward into its note instead of falling into it. Phonk, Memphis & rage drum kits
Three ways of making distortion the instrument rather than a mixing accident. Memphis is the oldest: dark minor loops mixed murky and dubbed cassette-to-cassette until the tape ceiling became part of the sound, which is why these hats have no air and the 808s drone instead of bounce. Phonk built a genre on worshipping that, and moved the TR-808's cowbell from an accent to the lead melody. Rage went the other direction — the 808 stops being the floor and becomes the hook, clipped and wavefolded until a bass note reads as a lead. Slower than trap, heavier than all of it.
Boom bap & lo-fi drum kits
Head-nod tempo, 85 to 95 BPM, and the swing is doing most of the work — somewhere past straight but short of a shuffle, which is the difference between a beat that knocks and one that marches. The kick is fat and the snare cracks on 2 and 4, usually two snares stacked because that is how the 90s records got one thick enough to carry a track. Lo-fi is the same skeleton with everything rounded off: softer transients, filtered highs, and a drunk timing that keeps hits from ever landing exactly together.
Club, Afro & Latin drum kits
Where the kick pattern and the percussion carry the track instead of the bass. Jersey club runs on a syncopated multi-kick bounce that stacks straight hits and triplet pairs inside one bar. Dembow and reggaeton lock a four-on-the-floor kick against a 3+3+2 tresillo on snare and rim — straight low end, leaning top. Amapiano puts a log drum where the bassline would be, bouncing between the kicks, with a constant 16th shaker over it. Afro drill crosses a drill 808 with a conga and tom family playing a polyrhythm against the grid.
Drum machine kits
Not a genre — a machine, reconstructed from its circuit rather than sampled from a record. Analog drum machine voices layer under anything: the sizzle of a real oscillator-based hat adds definition that noise-derived hats lack in a busy mix, and the kick sits happily under an 808 because it occupies a different part of the low end. Use it as the top layer on a kit from any family above.

Where do producers on Reddit get free drum kits?
Mostly from each other: r/Drumkits and the production subreddits are where links get passed around, and they are worth reading. The recurring complaint in those threads is also the reason this site exists — a large share of what circulates is repacked from other kits, so nobody in the chain can tell you where a sound originally came from or whether it was ever cleared. CRATE is the other kind: every sound is synthesized here from scratch, which makes the licence a fact about how the files were made rather than a promise on a download page.

24-bit / 44.1 kHz stereo WAV, peak-normalized, dry (no baked-in reverb on snares or claps) — one zip that drags into any DAW as a plain sample folder. Can I use one kit for more than one genre?
Constantly. The families here are about where a kit is easiest to start, not a fence. A drill 808 under boom bap drums is a whole sound, and the drum machine kit layers under everything.
